How safe are the airplanes in flight?

Does it make you wonder when you see this headline..."American cancels over 1,000n flights to complete inspections"? First, I'm glad they are checking the wiring in the MD80 aircraft. But, why couldn't they have done this before? The airline industry is already in the dumper with Aloha, ATA, and Skybus calling it quits due to higher gas prices.
