The New Years Resolution!

Well it is that time...we say goodbye to another year and welcome a new one with a bunch of promises to ourselves that will be broken by January 2nd. So what are you going to do at midnight 2009???

-Go to the gym?
-Stop smoking?
-Stop fighting with your partner or spouse?
-Be nicer to your family?
-Stop drinking? (I have made this promise hung over a toilet..and have broken that promise over/over)

My question to you...why do you you need a date on a calendar to make a change? I think New Years resolutions are crap and nobody sticks with'em. I guarantee the gyms will be empty again by the end of January. Let us call them "life changes" and they start today...not tomorrow or next week after the playoff game. My "life change" is to be healthier...and that includes and is not limited to eating better, getting to the gym more than I do, getting regular physicals, and more.

It is my hope that you have a great 2009 and that you make it the best year of your life.

We helped hand out the free trees at Fergusuns Friday!

We had a great time with Ken Fergusun on Friday at his lot on South Virginia Street (just south of Meadowood Mall) His lot kind of sticks out with the "free tree(s)" sign out front. Last week we started talking about Ken and his goal of helping needy families with free trees. The original plan was to giveaway 700...well he went a little over that! As of Friday the count was well over 3,000 free trees. Connie, Trey, and myself wanted to lend a hand...see it here.

Ken is a great guy and many families will benefit from his kind heart this holiday season.

Who should you tip? How much?

We have this conversation every year...should I tip this person for the holidays? Some say small gifts are the best way to go. Just so your in the loop here is the official lowdown...

The Emily Post Institute offers some general guidelines for holiday tipping.
Baby sitter, nanny: For a frequent baby sitter, one day/evening's pay or a gift equal to that amount. For a live-in or everyday nanny, one week's pay, plus a gift from the child.
Day care staff: A tip of $25 to $70 to each care provider plus a small gift from your child.
Child's teacher: Check your school's policy about gift giving. If gifts are allowed, give something as a token of you and your child's appreciation. Don't give cash. Gift cards for bookstores or a favorite coffee shop are always popular.
Fitness trainer: If it's a trainer you see regularly (especially if he or she comes to your home), a tip or gift equal to the cost of one session. If it's a group-class trainer or instructor, no tip is necessary, although a small token or card is always appreciated.
Gardener: A tip equal to the cost of one service. If you pay your gardener by the month for weekly service, tip a quarter to half of the monthly fee.
Hairstylist, manicurist: If you're a regular client, a tip or gift equal to one visit, depending what your normal service costs. A gift may be more appropriate if you tip after each service. If you're an infrequent customer just getting a holiday trim or polish, double your normal service tip.
Handyman: If you use this person on a regular basis, a $15 to $40 tip.
Home health employees: Check with the agency first, since some home nursing groups have a no-gifts/no-tips policy. If that's the case, consider making a donation to the agency.
Housekeeper: A tip equal to the cost of one service. It it's a live-in housekeeper, give a tip equal to one week's pay.
Massage therapist: A tip or gift equal to one session if you get frequent massages from this person. If you're only an occasional client, double your normal tip at the holidays.
Pet sitter: If you frequently use the same pet sitter, give a tip or gift equal to one or two days' pay.

Camp Christmas....Thanks!

Thank you to all that joined us at the Atlantis this past weekend for our annual Camp Christmas for Kids with RTC Ride and The Salvation Army. We stuffed the Toyland Express with several hundred gifts and had a lot of fun with everyone that came out to support area kids in need. With the economy and these troubling times...it was so nice to see our community come together AGAIN to help others. If, you were not able donate a gift..I encourage you to do something for someone else this holiday. It doesn't have to be a gift that is bought ...it could be a helping hand or just being a good listener. I promise whatever your efforts...they will be appreciated!

News as of today's dollar!

Thanks BFF Peggy Rew...love this!

Thinking about every dollar!

I think everyone can relate to a person that watches every dollar and pinches every penny! I have never been that way before...not because I'm rich. (please I work in radio) But, I believe you should enjoy life, and if you truly want, or need something...you get it. Well in today's world I'm rethinking my ways and thinking about where I spend my hard earned dollars. I find myself looking for deals at the grocery store and have been using coupons from the RGJ and programs like Val Pak. When I see cheap gas arround town I think about stopping and topping off the tank. I have made mistakes with money like many of us have in our country. I'm a person that tries to look at the positive even in the darkest situations. In our latest struggle with the economy I can think of one...it will force us all to think about what we truly need. Do you really need (4) ATVs, maybe a 60inch projection TV, or rack about a $10,000 vacation on your credit card because you have to getaway! Enjoy life like you should..just be smarter because we all have no idea what's down the road. Talk to you in the morning...

Free to good home. Excellent guard dog. Owner cannot afford to feed him anymore, as there are no more thieves, murderers, or molesters left in the neighborhood for him to eat. Most of them knew him as 'Holy Sh^#.'!

Take care of your friend! Pet Hot Weather Tips!

Check the ground: Asphalt, cement and even the desert floor can get extremely hot. Before letting your dogs walk on any of them in the heat of the day, check it with your hand. If it feels too hot for your hand, it̢۪s too hot for their paws. Better yet, time your walks in the early morning or the evening.

Sunscreen: Pink noses, white fur and very short fur can lead to sunburns. Sunscreen can help. Be sure to use one formulated for your animal, and regardless don't put it on their bellies where it's easily licked. Licking sunscreen lotion can cause drooling, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy.

Breed savvy: Snub-nosed dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, Lhasa apsos and shih tzus should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible. They can overheat very quickly. Cats don't cool themselves well by panting either so keep them out of hot situations.

No ice water: If dogs become too overheated, cool them down. Move them to the shade. A towel soaked with a garden hose can be laid over them. But ice water is bad news because it can cool them too quickly.

Car trouble: We all know that shady areas can change and vehicles can get too hot inside quickly when hit by the sun, even with the windows cracked. In fact, it's best not to bring your pet with you in hot weather because even if you're in the store only two minutes, someone is going to call the authorities and request that officers rescue your pet, costing taxpayers money -- and you never know what might happen in the store to delay you and put your pet's life at risk. Kidney and liver failure can begin quickly in a hot car. Carry a gallon of cool water in the car just to be safe.

Access to water and shade: If your dog is left in the back yard while you're at work, make sure there's plenty of water in a tip-proof bowl -- and make sure there's shade. An insulated dog house works well.

Just in time for the 4th of July

US Constitution Toilet Paper looks like the US Constitution, but the words have been updated to reflect the actual modus operandi of our modern government. Highlights include a revised Presidential Oath of Office, tricameral Congress, and Bill of Privileges. US Constitution Toilet Paper causes many people to ponder what our Founders wanted, what America has become, and whether we have lived up to our ideals. More info is available at constitutionTP.com.

Something was "grilling" at Nothing To It Culinary Center

I always thought I knew how to grill...get a flame, throw the meat on, burn it, and eat it! There is a way to grill that is fun, healthy, and incredibly delicious! My buddy Don and I took the class at Nothing To It Culinary Center on Crummer Lane. You have heard Lara on the show with us for our Health and Beauty Tip on Thursdays. I have been joking with her and owner Jay Bushman about coming to the class to perfect my skillz...and they said enough talking...just do it! We had a great time with our four-some Scott and Sean.(that's the cool thing you get to meet some great people)

Below you will see me scooping out the tomato that was then stuffed with grilled veggies and mozzarella cheese. We then placed it back on the grill for about 10 minutes! The result...FANTASTIC! Here is the rest of the crew hard at work preparing the goods for the gas, and charcoal grills waiting outside off the patio!
Not only did we prepare an appetizer...but also a dessert on the grill of course! Blueberry cobbler anybody...yes, on the grill! That's Lara showing off the almighty Weber grilling machine.

Gotta love the fresh grilled veggies....a little oil, salt, pepper, and off to the grill! We also made a homemade potato salad with no mayo or mustard...it was the best!

Lara is telling us to get the steaks and halibut...the grill is ready. We learned a few quick tips here...
1...start with a clean and seasoned grill (coat with grape seed oil 15 minutes before cooking)
2...use grill starting cubes if your a charcoal user...to help eliminate that lighter fluid taste.
3...when using skewers...soak them in water before use so they don't burn up.
4...season, oil, and chill your fish before placing on the grill. The fish goes from the fridge to the grill to help keep it from sticking and to keep the meat together.

Look at this spread! The best part is the eating of course and it's healthy.(even the wine)
Menu
Stuffed tomatoes with grilled veggies and mozzarella
Potato salad with light oil, grilled tatters, basil, dill, and oil
Steak
Seasoned halibut with a light oil dressing with shallots and chives
and the blueberry cobbler for dessert.
If you want to have a great evening out, learn something, meet great people, and eat incredible healthy food...you need to go to Nothing To It. Call Lara and Jay for more information at 826-2628. Check out the complete class schedule at http://www.nothingtoit.com/ . Listen for Lara on the show 7/3 to help you get set for the holiday!

Order in the court...Jury Duty

You may have heard me mention that I was selected for Federal jury duty! I originally received the summons about 4 weeks ago and asked for a delay due to work reasons.(they agreed with no issues...I think her name is Audrey..very cool lady) I received the new summons and I was very excited to serve on my scheduled day of Tuesday June 24th. I followed the instructions and called the night before to learn that my Law and Order day with the Feds had been moved till Monday. Talk about a bummer I was all pumped up and ready to roll...I was even going to wear a tie! When I was telling people about the date being moved they questioned me on how I could be so happy and excited about sitting on a jury? My answer is simple...it's a right and privilege to be a part of the court system. It is also me responsibility to know how it works and to do my part. I think I would be a good juror for a good percentage of cases...let you know what happens Monday.

Sing on stage with Stevie Wonder

Here is the deal we have had soooo many great auditions on our Stevie Wonder audition line...it all comes down to Friday at Rum Bullions inside the Silver Legacy! Clearing up the myhths about saving at the pump!

I heard ______ saves gas...does it?"The myths go on and on and ON about ways to save at the pump. We investigated a few of the most common myths find out what actually works!

1....Fill up in the morning, because you get more actual gas when it is cooler earlier in the day and the molecules haven't heated up and expanded.FALSE. The gas tanks are below ground and stay cool all day. Plus, the expansion that the molecules may make in the heat is pretty minimal.

2...Changing your air filter will ensure better milage.FALSE. A dirty filter won't help, and it's a good idea to change it for the overall well-being and maintenance of your car. Unfortunately though, it won't give you better milage.

3....Premium gas will give you better milage.FALSE! It saved fractions of a penny. If your car calls for premium, you may see some increased milage, but we found, it's very minimal. If your car doesn't call for premium, you don't need it.

4...If you pump gas slower, you'll get more.FALSE! It just doesn't work that way, plain and simple.

5....The additives and pour-ins will clean your tank and improve your milage.FALSE! Wouldn't the fuel and car companies already be including this in their gasoline and automobiles if it really worked? Be careful too; these are big no-no's with some makes and models of cars.

6....If you fill up your gas tank between 3-5 p.m., the price will be lower.TRUE! Gas stations adjust their prices based on the stock market close for that day

7....Make sure your tires are properly inflated.TRUE! FINALLY, something to help! "PROPERLY" is the key word here. If your tires are underinflated, your milage will drop. If your tires are over-inflated, you risk a blow-out. So, check your owner's manual to where your tires should be inflated, and adjust accordingly.

Bill and Connie are getting set for another great Relay For Life and we want you to join us at Bishop Manogue 5/31!

Please make a donation to Team Alice and help us support the fight against cancer!

Cancer affects millions of people across the globe and many people right here in Reno/Sparks. This year we honor local cancer survivor Simonne Allen from Sparks. A loving friend, wife, and mother of two fighting the fight every day against this horrible disease.

By joining our team or making a donation, you can make a difference. Thanks!

Note from Bill: You may have heard me tell you on the air about my mother's cancer coming back. It's those words you fear and never want to hear. As she prepares for surgery and over 15-weeks of therapy that lies ahead. This year's Relay is extra special to me. I hope you will join us to help find a cure.

How safe are the airplanes in flight?

Does it make you wonder when you see this headline..."American cancels over 1,000n flights to complete inspections"? First, I'm glad they are checking the wiring in the MD80 aircraft. But, why couldn't they have done this before? The airline industry is already in the dumper with Aloha, ATA, and Skybus calling it quits due to higher gas prices. From what it sounds like to me...the FAA is trying to play catch-up on a few issues. Flying out of Reno on any airline..you might want to check this site in advance www.renoairport.com. The Botox Bandit...

Here is the story we were talking about in Stupid News!

Genesis Medical Spa owner Scott Seidenstricker said he’s on the hunt for a “Botox Bandit.”The bandit he’s talking about received about $1,300 in Botox treatments at his Reno salon on March 13 and then skipped off without paying the bill. She told the technician she had an important call to make and would be back in one minute to go to her next appointment, Seidenstricker said.Instead, the woman walked to her car and drove off, Seidenstricker said.Botox is the brand name of a neurotoxin that is typically injected into a person’s face for cosmetic purposes so that frown lines and wrinkles are smoothed. The spa owner said he hopes the photos his technician took of the woman will help police identify her. “If it’s happening at Genesis, it’s happening somewhere else,” Seidenstricker said.He said his technicians take photos of clients before and after their treatments so they can see the difference the procedure makes. He said the “Botox Bandit” seemed very uncomfortable when she was told they were taking the photos. In some photos, she raised her head enough so her face was not clearly seen, he said.Seidenstricker said this was the third time in about a year a client left the salon without paying for pricey medical treatments.“I really don’t know where they get the idea to do this,” he said.Reno police fraud unit Sgt. Jeff Freelove said his detectives are investigating. He said there has been no other reports of “Botox Bandits” or others similar crimes at local salons and spas.Seidenstricker said the woman was seen driving off in a green four-door sedan, possibly a late 1990s Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, with California license plates.
